Buikema blended her training, her own parenting skills, and struggles to show us methods and reasons to take a journey too often not prepared for. Parenting! This is a must read for first time parents. Holding this marvelous book, I was awed by its literary value and its presentation makes this a work of enormous value in all sort of category... A must read!
This book offered several admirable tips on parenting, but one of my favorite passages in the entire book was titled "Build a Better Mattress." You can find this about 60% of the way through the book. I would love to share it but this passage alone makes this book worth reading, and I don't like to share spoilers.
Particularly useful for new parents, this book provides a great amount of useful information in a very palatable way. Rather than inundate parents with more than they need to know, Parenting . . . A Work in Progress presents just the right amount of facts interspersed with anecdotes that make clear what those facts mean. Covering aspects of behavior from birth through adolescence, the author has done a great job of explaining why kids do what they do, as well as what parents can do in response. Great for grandparents, too.
This would be a WONDERFUL baby present for a new mom! It is an easy read but FULL of helpful information for parents (and grandparents) about children at all stages in their development. I wish I had been able to read this book when my children were young, but I plan to give it to each of my daughters when they have their own children. The book is full of examples to illustrate each stage of a child's physical and mental growth and development. As a mother and former teacher, I know how important it is to build a good foundation with one's children while they are young so that the teen years are smoother and the children grow up to be responsible adults with good character. This book would be a big help in achieving that goal.
Wish I had know about the book when my great grandson was younger. he is now 9 years old, not too late for some of the ideas, but would have been better when he was a "sponge" and could absorb what the book talked about.
Being a parent raises doubt at each new stage of development--potty training or the first day of school. What about being a working mom or dad . . . or divorce? The author understands my fears and challenges. She reassures me that I don’t have to be perfect to be a good parent. I just need knowledge, skills, love, and patience. Ellen mingles her own experiences with her formal education in growth and psychology . . . along with delightful humor.
Great book for first time parents. Easy to read, informative and entertaining as well. Ms Buikema's book would make wonderful addition to any Early Childhood Education course or seminar. As a grandmother of three and and a certified preschool teacher, I highly recommend this parenting book.
