Sailing Alone Around the World eBook Joshua Slocum
An absolutely BRILLIANT read; and yes, I am shouting the word "Brilliant". This book was written in the late 1890s by the amazing Canadian seaman who was the first person to ever sail around the world on a yacht while completely alone and unassisted. His accomplishments are jaw-dropping, for he managed to navigate dangerous waters with a damaged tin clock and a compass. He didn't have a proper chronometer, because he couldn't afford $15 to buy one. His cheap clock cost him just $2. Some of his navigation had to be done without charts (because they were accidentally destroyed), so he did much of his sailing by memory and with the aid of a school atlas.Be warned: If you read this book, you are likely to be inspired to become a sailor, or at least learn to sail a yacht.

Sailing Alone Around the World eBook Joshua Slocum Reviews
Classic!
Some wisdom can be obtained in these pages for the cruising yachtsman planning a long voyage. Less gadgets and more practical seamanship can make for a more satisfying experience on a long passage. Young people hoping to cruise their own boats would do well to learn from Captain Slocum what can be accomplished with an old fashioned full keel hull and a tight budget.
I wanted to read this book as my interest in sailing is getting bigger by the day, the book was fun to read and my kindle dictionary was invaluable.
His story was intriguing and was obviously a great sailor as not many would attempt his voyage by themselves. If your interest lies is the great oceans of the world and sailing about I strongly recommend it.
This book is a surprisingly fun read and is written in a delightful style that allows it to flow right along almost as easily as the Spray herself. The reader might need to brush up on nautical and sailing terms to fully appreciate the story which is well worth the time spent doing so. It's easy to see why many consider this as one of the top stories of all time. Captain Slocum did a fine job in preserving a bit of world history for all generations to enjoy. It's also not hard to guess at his ultimate demise in light of all the dangers he encountered on this around the world trip.
