Award-winning photojournalist David Cowardin uncovers the heart and heroism of animal rescue in the Deep South as he recounts his wild journey living on the road in Alabama with his dreadlocked friend. Following the state's most courageous animal rescuers, the author quickly encounters moments of heartbreak and uncertainty, risking his life and ultimately filling an RV with rescue dogs to be transported to his hometown in Minnesota.
Down South Justice Animal Rescue in the Deep South David Cowardin 9780692579145 Books
Down South Justice is a well paced, thoughtful, and balanced look at the issues surrounding animal cruelty in Alabama. Cowardin wrote the book as a follow-up to his documentary film Roots of Rescue for which he and his friend Joe followed animal rescuers through Alabama while searching for meaning behind the cruelty they witnessed.I was riveted from page one. Cowardin weaves personal narrative throughout the book, which gives insight into the human condition and brings thoughtful compassion to a practice that is at first glance horrific, inexplicable, and unconscionable.
This is a self-published narrative that raises the bar for other self-published work. The writing is clean, descriptive, and honest in its unapologetic, uncensored telling. The subject matter is well researched and broadly investigated. The storyline is tight and real-life characters well-defined.
As with all published work, typos happen and this book is not immune. Being a stickler for elevating reader-experience above everything, typos would normally take this rating from 5 stars to 4, but in this instance the quality of the narrative far outweighs the distraction of typos. A highly recommended and educational read!

Down South Justice Animal Rescue in the Deep South David Cowardin 9780692579145 Books Reviews
Thank you David for an excellent read! I hope everybody in the state of Alabama reads this book and joins the fight to end animal cruelty in the south. You did an amazing job telling our story and I can't thank you enough!
Thank you David for this accurate depiction of animal abuse in Alabama and the South in general. I personally know more than half the people interviewed and admire and respect each one for their perseverance to save animals from abuse in spite of the antiquated laws that exist. Many of us are trying to change those laws. Maybe this will be the year.
What I love about this book, is that he asks of himself how our values are created. How it isn't just a simple problem with a simple fix; but rather an awareness issue, that ties into our experiences and how we are raised. He shows an overview by including himself, that has us also looking inwards at ourselves.
This book asks us all how we treat those who have no voice or how our voices are used.
Thanks for being so honest David.
I love how you write with your vulnerability!
